Why Should You Choose Physical Therapy Over Opioids?
An opioid epidemic currently has America in its grasp and is impacting every socioeconomic class. For this reason, the CDC advises people to choose physical therapy over prescription painkillers whenever possible. Their website states that an estimated 115 people every day die from an opioid overdose, and upwards of 29% of people prescribed opioids will end up misusing these dangerous drugs.
Preoperative and postoperative preparation and healing are essential for excellent postoperative outcomes. One of the most important reasons to choose post-surgical physical therapy is the possibility of reducing or eliminating the need for prescription pain medicines, such as opioids.

FAQs
How long does post-surgical rehabilitation usually take?
Your exact post-surgical rehabilitation timeline will vary depending on the type of surgery, your overall health, and your recovery goals. Some patients recover in a matter of weeks, while others require several months of rehabilitation. Regardless, your physical therapist will monitor your progress, adjust your treatment plan as you heal, and help you safely progress through each stage of recovery while following your surgeon’s recommendations.
Will my physical therapist communicate with my surgeon during recovery?
Yes. The team at Excel Physical Therapy works closely with your surgeon and other healthcare providers to help ensure your rehabilitation stays on track. If your recovery is progressing more slowly than expected or your protocol requires modifications, your therapist can share objective progress updates and coordinate care so everyone is working toward the same recovery goals.
Why is a home exercise program important after surgery?
Your home exercise program reinforces the progress you make during in-clinic physical therapy sessions, helping to improve mobility, strength, circulation, and movement while reducing stiffness between appointments. Your therapist will update your home exercise program as your recovery advances to ensure it remains safe and effective for your stage of healing.
What should I do if my recovery seems slower than expected?
Healing is rarely a straight line, and it is completely normal to have days when your tissues feel a bit more sensitive as they rebuild. How quickly you recover depends on your specific procedure, age, and health history. Ongoing communication is also essential during rehabilitation. Let your physical therapist know your concerns, especially if you’re experiencing increased pain, swelling, or difficulty moving. We can evaluate your symptoms, modify your rehabilitation plan if appropriate, and determine whether you should follow up with your surgeon.
How does Excel Physical Therapy measure progress after surgery?
We use objective measurements throughout your rehabilitation to track your progress and adjust your rehabilitation program as needed. Depending on your needs and the phase of recovery, we might track:
- Swelling
- Pain levels
- Joint range of motion
- Strength
- Walking ability
- Balance
- Your ability to perform everyday activities, such as climbing stairs or getting in and out of a chair
